Emergency Make Up
First rule of thumb: we don't want to look like Barbie dolls. Except for the long skinny legs, tiny waist, button nose,
graceful neck and long eyelashes. No seriously, isn't the
doll-like, done to perfection look so repelling?
I think the reason for make-up is two-fold. Firstly, you can emphasize your assets and hide your flaws. Secondly, when you've just pulled an all-nighter, travelled for 36 hours and are due for a major presentation in 15 minutes and prefer to look more like a human and less like a zombie, a little make up can do the trick.
When in a hurry never go for any precision-style make-up. Instead opt for a smudgy look as it's almost impossible to mess up.
Here's a video I made for you. It is a very quick make-up, done in 2-3 minutes that can make us look like we know what we're doing. It is so easy I can usually do it while drinking my coffee or listening to my voicemail or whatever your choice of multitasking may be.
The absolute minimum make up to own (you'll probably want more than just this) is eye shadow, eye pencil (liquid eye liner is great too, but opt for a pencil in an emergency because of the drying time), mascara, lipgloss and blush.
I believe sometimes we need a bit of foundation but be careful, a caked face is very, very unattractive. It is best just to have good skin (moisturize and exfoliate a lot and drink enough water) and then just use less than half a pea size amount of foundation to correct any redness as needed.

Once you've found your perfect lip gloss, I suggest you buy 3 of them: one for your bathroom, one for your purse and one for your car. This is because you'll need to reapply it after eating or drinking. But only buy three of them once you find the right one, otherwise your bathroom, car and purse will end up being cluttered with old dried up make up.
To me a good lip gloss is one that stays on for a long time, is non-sticky, and has no flavor whatsoever please. Clinique’s Full Potential is my absolute favorite. A great drugstore brand is Rimmel's Volume Booster in a light brown or a pale pink.....
The same applies to your blush, buy three of them and here is why. When in a REAL hurry (I am talking having to do your make up in your rearview mirror under a red light) and you're looking like... well... let’s just say you’re not looking your best, blush is what will save the day. 
I suggest a cream blush because they look very natural and non-powdery. And, very importantly, you won't need a brush, you can just use your fingers. Smudge it on your cheeks and under your eye brows and you'll look awake and happy. A great inexpensive brand is Revlon's Cream Blush, in a light shade.
There are many more tricks. Another time I'll tell you about the expensive purse trick. That's for the occasion when you really don't have the time or you're just too lazy to change from your staple jeans, tank top and flip-flops but you still want first-class treatment... this is when those snobbish Luis Vuitton signature handbags come in handy..... But that's for another time.
Meanwhile, drive safely with that mascara in one hand and a skinny latte in the other.
